PA Readies First Temporary Regulation for Medical Marijuana

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is gearing up to release its first of a series of temporary regulations pertaining to the state’s new medical marijuana program. Secretary of Health Karen Murphy announced on June 1st, 2016 that the first regulation, which will address growers and producers, will be coming shortly. An online survey will be available for potential growers that will allow them to provide their feedback and recommendations for the potential rule.

On April 17th, 2016, Governor Tom Wolf signed the medical marijuana legalization bill into law, making Pennsylvania the 24th state to approve the use of cannabis for medical purposes. The full program is expected to be rolled out over the next 18 to 24 months.

The remaining regulations will follow in time, addressing dispensaries, physicians, patients and caregivers, and laboratories, respectively. These interim rules will last for two years from the date of their implementation and will provide explicit details on how the program will operate. The full series of regulations are expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
